Emily Severson, a black belt in karate at age 12, stands in a ready position. “It’s fun to learn how to defend yourself,” she said. Severson began taking karate classes at White Wolf Martial Arts when she was 8 years old.
In July, Emily became the youngest black belt in her form of karate - Urufu Ryu Karate Do, which means “wolf style, open-handed way.” She is ranked third in the world in the style, which was developed at her school, White Wolf Martial Arts in McMinnville.
Emily has been doing karate for one-third of her life. Now 12, she started taking classes at White Wolf when she was 8.
I definately am for early learning and this is quite a wel done job but I often wonder how effective these young people actually are and how they would actually perform in a situation? A maturity is also a requirement so to not look for trouble..
Overconfidence could kill you if you think you are something you are not - like if you learnt bullshido martial arts which was really only streching and dance and get your ass kicked or worse in a dangerous situation.
She seems quite mature in her statements though and sees karate as more than just for defense and ability to fight.
Contrary to what some people think, karate is not about beating people up, Emily said. It’s about having fun and learning to defend yourself.
The idea is to disarm your attacker, then get away, she said. “You don’t just go around hitting people. You use it only when necessary.”
Emily said karate also teaches her respect, “for everyone, for anything.” And it teaches honor and discipline, as well.
Karate has even helped her overcome her shyness, Emily said. “It’s helped me speak up.”
