Karate Practicioner receives the John D,. Sr. and Althea Griner Scholarship from UMBC

Among the honorees this year was Yohance Mandela Allette (the youngest honoree at l8). Yohance was introduced to The Baltimore Times when he was only 7 years-old and had won a prestigious award in Grenada, West Indies, where he was given the title of “Reader Extraordinaire.” Yohance had at that time completed all the classics and had written reports on all of them. The second place was given to a 16-year-old.

Yohance continues on a path that he has been weaving from an early age. He is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and was recently chosen as one of Baltimore’s Most Amazing Youth by the Urban Leadership Institute. He has written a one-man play that has been staged at the Park School of Baltimore (his alma mater). He has received awards for poetry and is a junior black belt in Kenpo Karate.
