Martial Arts and injuries

As you know Martial Arts can be a painful yet rewarding discipline. Some of you have had your injuries over the years.

Recently I had an accident on my motorcycle and it made me think of this article…

Concussions happen everyday and when you are into contact sports you are at a higher risk than those who play video games all day.

One thing to remember is that any concussion is bad. Your brain floats around in your skull in a fluid called Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) and its only attachment is your spinal cord. When you whack your head the soft tissue that your brain is composed of (grey matter) then bounces off the inside of your skull causing damage.

The most common is the lowest level which is just like watching a boxing match where the one boxer get stunned and falls back a couple of step. So just remember to take it easy after a bump due to another injury called a Second Incident Strike (SIS) this where you don’t take it easy and get another concussion before you brain heals from the first and this can be fatal.

On the other hand the worst is like I had, a class 5, I was unconscious for 35 minutes and actually slid into a ditch being dug, fell 9 feet to the bottom then my 210 pound moto fell on my head…luckily there was no broken bones…then again…my mom always said I was hard headed. I am still feeling the symptoms almost a month after the accident, I get dizzy when I sit up and lay down etc.

So take care and watch out for head (brain injuries) injuries.

Latter,

Nick
